So...we drew again
Winner of the sculpture drawing: Alden Lanier. We will be contacting him soon. .We made over six hundred dollars on the sculpure drawing. We would like to thank all of those who bought tickets. A special thanks goes out to Jo Jean DeHoney for donating the sculpture and to Gay Tharp for organizing the event. THANK YOU!

Book Sales were discussed. They are going very well. People are using them for Christmas presents right now.

Terry Jeffers and Alms are looking into getting the Old original Hyatt cabin off the mountain for our history work. It might not work out, but we are grateful for their efforts.

We discussed our next book project and came up with some ideas. We will be sending letters out sometime soon asking for help and participation.

Current Finances were discussed.
We are going to pay taxes on the book since it isn't a one or two time a year event.

Pati McKim called.

She has a brand quilt that was made by her grandmother. She would like to donate it to us. She also has a black and white picture of her grandmother to go with the quilt. She got Jim Caines to help her with the brands on it, so they are labeled.

She also has a silver bowl? that Jack Turner won. She would like to donate that too.

I said we would contact her about picking it up and explained that everything is in storage now since HCC is being remodeled.

The winner of the quilt that the Hyattville Quilters pieced together and Jeanne Knudsen of Cody machine quilted is Carl Bezilla of Kirtland Ohio. Carl has been coming to the Hyattville area to hunt deer, elk and pheasants for nearly 30 years. Many of you know Carl as he has been a great fan of the Harvest Dinner and has participated in many activities while he spends the month of October in Hyattville. He has been reading Bill and Julie Greer's copy of "Paintrock Tales and Bonanza Trails" and has enjoyed it very much. Skylar Tharp drew the winning ticket at the drawing October 26. Congratulations Carl! We all hope you enjoy the quilt…

The raffle of the quilt is just one of the fund raisers that the active history group has held to make money for their history projects. One project that may be coming is a history museum within the Community Center.

Corrections to Paintrock Tales and Bonanza Trails

We are communicating some of the major corrections to make to Paintrock Tales and Bonanza Trails book. There are lots of little mistakes with commas, capitals, words that appear out of nowhere, checks that are called receipts (page 38)etc. but I will leave those alone on this blog.

History Meeting?

I sent out a notice not too long ago to get a feel for trying some new books. I have had good feedback and people are volunteering to help. I think it helps that we have one book under our belt. Is there a good time for you to meet in November? We do have some topics on our agenda: sculpture, quilt, book sales, taxes, presentation, evaluating old book the goods and the needs, and getting assignment ready for new work. Please let me know if you want to add to the agenda. I think we may need at close to an hour and a half for the meeting. Gay said that the new order of books hasn't come yet, but as always, she is keeping things going. Thanks Gay! Thanks to all that attended the Big Horn Historical Meeting.

On October 19, 2008, we attended the Big Horn Historical Society's monthly meeting. Tom Davis gave an excellent presentation on rivers/creeks and other landforms of the in the Big Horn Basin. It was quite interesting. Eleanor Hamilton, Jerry and Gay Tharp, Lin and Marylou Doyle, Jill Tharp, Phyllis Tharp and Denise Herman spoke about the Hyattville book. The audience was very nice and purchased a number of books. We appreciate being invited. It would be nice if we could send a Hyattville representative each month. It is the third Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m.

I believe Gay said that she wants to have the sculpture drawing sometime towards the end of October. I would like to if we can, have a meeting to talk about our new plans. I told people November but that is coming right up on us!

Old Timers 2008

Party in the Old Town

This year, once again, in Hyattville, we celebrated Old Timers. This year, however, we celebrated with the Guardians of the Range with the National Day of the American Cowboy. Not only did we have a picnic and a dance, but we also had a parade, booths, competitions, etc.

The potluck picnic, traditionally held at noon in the group picnic area on the north end of Medicine Lodge State Archeological Site, began at 11 a.m. They started earlier this year in order to get all the activities in during the afternoon. Old Timers were announced and Becky Allred introduced her family.

Other activities will included pony rides, a silent auction, a dummy roping for the kids, log branding, stories by Danny Many Horses, a western coloring contest for children, a worn-out cowboy boot contest where the winners in both men's and women's category were given $50 gift certificates toward the purchase of a new pair of boots.

A street dance, to the music of the Powell group "Undesided," lasted from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Beginning to Collect again

We all have learned so much from our first attempt at getting some of our history published. While we wait for the Hyattville Community Center museum room to get renovated, we think maybe this is a good time to put some thoughts out to you. Many of our photographs didn’t get published in the Paintrock Tales and Bonanza Trails book because of some technical difficulties. We also have missed some families AND people have mentioned that there are “some more to the stories” that they would like to add. Well, here is our chance. In the next few years, we would like to collect 250-300 more stories (and about that many pictures) from Hyattville/Bonanza people for a new publication and/or for the museum. We would like YOUR help. We would like you to talk with your family, plus people you know whose families are not around anymore. We would like you to gather stories, pictures, and information. We will divide these into four categories this time.
• General Stories (a book with long and short stories of growing up on the Paintrock and in Bonanza) You can see some examples in the Paintrock/Bonanza book.
• Brands/Ranches (an information book about area brands and ranches with information about the family ranch and brand(s), ranching stories and pictures).
• Military (an information book about our military personnel with information, stories, and pictures).
• Information that people prefer not to be in a book but feel would benefit our history center’s research unit for people that want to come in someday and research their families.
Some Notes:
The books mentioned above can span generations of our people. We especially like pictures, diaries, and stories from previous generations but WELCOME and want all stories of our area people.
We would like to include information not already found in Paintrock Tales and Bonanza Trails, but we realize there will be some repeats. If you do not have a book, Denise can loan you one to look at, or you can buy one at Animal Farmacy, Hyattville Café or from Gay Tharp.
All pictures, if scanned, must be at least 300dpi resolution (a painful lesson learned).
Your ideas and input are WELCOMED and DESIRED. It is so much better to have the help on the front end rather than the back end when it is too late.
Information that we get this round will probably be divided into the three categories of stories, brands/ranches and military even when it comes from the same interview session unless you tell us otherwise.
It could be that these three smaller books will be published at the same time, depending on how much information comes in on each.
When finished, from you, we would also like a kind of “forward” page that describes your overall impressions and experiences of gathering information and your take on your Hyattville and Bonanza experiences.
Although we are putting our emphasis on family gathering stories and interviewing family, Denise will be available to record and type if you decide to do individual or family interviews. We have found that it is hard to listen and record at the same time. Just give her a call.
If you are interested in this, please write, call a history member. We believe we will meet the middle of November to work out details and touch base with what we are doing.
If you do not wish to be in charge of gathering your family’s information, would you mind finding a member of your family that might? If we don’t hear from you, will not want to bother you, but we REALLY wish to have your family included.

Jessica is also a local member on the committee but we are anxiously awaiting the birth of Kyle and Jessica’s new son, so she is going to rest for a bit.

Hyattville History Book

The Paintrock Tales and Bonanza Trails, after four years, was finally completed. It can be purchased for $45-$50 at the Hyattville Cafe, Animal Farmacy, Radio Shack in Worland or by calling Gay Tharp at 307-469-2218. It does cost $5.00 extra for shipping.
